Wildlife Conservation Experience (WCE): Feedback by Susan Rodgers

WCE at HESC - Susan Rodgers

Susan Rodgers recently participated in the WCE programme, and gives an account of her experience in this latest blog update.

“I’ve just spent 3 weeks on the above programme and just wanted to feedback on what a fantastic experience it was. I was there from 24th May to 13th June.

Tanita and Craig were both amazing student co-ordinators, both making sure we were well looked after and busy each day, whether it was feeding the animals, being involved at the centre or trips to local facilities. We had some amazing braai evenings, and sat around the open fire eating Craig’s tasty food. They built a lovely team atmosphere among a group from very different backgrounds. They encouraged us to make the most of every experience.

HESC is an amazing place, doing vital work and you have a dedicated, hardworking team who bring enthusiasm and passion to educating everyone who visits the centre.

I was lucky enough to see several procedures performed by Dr Rogers, including replacing the cap covering Philippa’s wound.  I also had the privilege of meeting and talking to Kingsley Holgate when he visited the centre. I also had the dubious pleasure of dressing up as a rhino for a couple of hours!

Every single member of the HESC team took time to answer questions and ensure that whilst we were there we were part of the team. The curators and guides were especially accommodating and we never felt that we were in the way or a burden on their busy days.

I have come away with a deeper understanding of cheetah and rhino conservation and the issues surrounding both species. I feel I can spread the message here in the UK with more confidence.

I hope to return to HESC one day, but in the meantime I will continue to support your work in anyway I can.

Kind regards

Susan Rodgers”
