On Wednesday, 18 June 2014, the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre welcomed the arrival of two huge trucks carrying bags of cement courtesy of PPC Cement, the leading supplier of cement in southern Africa. HESC is always grateful for the continued support provided by PPC Cement as the cement is vital to improving and developing the infrastructure at the centre. The trucks that brought the cement all the way from Johannesburg were sponsored by our long-time supporters and friends of HESC, Heather and Jimmy Giannoccaro of G&H Transport and Repairs.

The first load of cement arrived in January 2012 when HESC was desperate to repair the extensive damage that occurred as a result of the heavy flooding. The maintenance team was delighted to receive the cement in order to start repairing many of the bridges, roads and dam walls throughout the centre as well as to the walls of the animal hospital. The cement was vital in repairing John’s Dam wall, the largest dam in the Hoedspruit farm area of the Kapama Private Game Reserve.

Since then, the cement has been used to create slabs in each of the feeding areas in each cheetah enclosure as well as to build enclosures for the centre’s resident meerkats and ostriches. The cement was also used to build a bathroom at our student camp, build a drain and boma area at Khula’s

Cottage and to upgrade the garden at the Sebeka Guest House. The cement was vital to the construction and reparation of the fence, which was built to protect the elephants housed in stables at Camp Jabulani.

Heather and Jimmy Giannoccaro of G&H Transport and Repairs have provided an overwhelming amount of support to HESC over the years. From cash donations to truck tires, from a mini-bus for Paulos Nogobeni Primary School to transporting cheetah from Cradock to HESC, G&H Transport and Repairs have always done their very best to tick off items on our wish list and we are sincerely grateful for this!

The cement will be used for much needed maintenance around the centre as well as in the construction of a brand new enclosure for young cheetah, where guests are able to walk onto a deck and get up close to these spotted cats.

We sincerely thank PPC Cement and G&H Transport and Repairs from the bottom of our hearts for your invaluable support over the years!
